History of Skylark

In fall 1990, Founder, Barrie Parker, began the work of establishing a steering committee to follow the “How to Start a Crisis Pregnancy Center” manual established by Care Net. By June 20, 1991, the steering committee made way for the original Board of Directors to govern the foundation and be incorporated September 30, 1991 as Crisis Pregnancy Center of Coastal Georgia, Inc. The Board of Directors determined affiliation with the national organization Care Net would best prepare the organization to be a Christ-centered professional organization. On October 1, 1992 the Brunswick Facility opened to serve the Golden Isles.

In 1996 the transition was made concerning the distribution of maternity and baby supplies to the clients served through Crisis Pregnancy Center. The Dedication Dollars program (known today as Earn While You Learn) provided a means for clients to better themselves and receive the goods necessary to parent their child.

By the summer of 1998 a steering committee developed In Wayne County to prepare for a second office opening in Jesup Georgia, October 4, 1999. A third office in Kingsland, Georgia opened in April of 2003. Also in the spring of 2003 a medical steering committee lead by Dr. Bob Davis developed to explore the transition of the ministry into a medical model. Medical conversions were completed in Brunswick in 2007, in 2008 in Kingsland, and in 2012 in Jesup. As a result limited sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment along with limited obstetrical ultrasound are provided to clients.

In 2017, the staff and Board of Directors saw a need for a new name and branding to broaden our reach to more women, thus the name Skylark was born. Also in Fall of 2017 the Mobile Medical Unit was launched, serving more communities in Southeast Georgia.

We believe that every human life is divinely purposed. Valuing the unalienable dignity of all human life, with care, we compassionately share the truth with all who will listen.

Sexual Integrity and Purity
We believe sexual activity is intended and most wholesome inside a committed marriage. Therefore, we strive to encourage a culture of purity where sex is respected as a unique and intimate core of married family.

Restoration
We believe the most destructive past is not able to escape enduring hope for the future. We assist others through authentic relationships, integrity, and giving oneself to meet the needs of others and equipping them to succeed.

Respect
We believe advancing the sanctity of human life and sexual purity should be accomplished with complete respect for the autonomy of those we serve. Our desired culture does not take precedence over the values, beliefs and dignity of the lives we serve.
